The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum has restored the impressive red-brick building designed in 1894, and since 2010 has exhibited mainly modern art. The museum's series of events, "The City and the Museum," was designed to look beyond the confines of an exhibition and consider what role the museum could play in the Marunouchi business district from an urban planning perspective. Today, the museum is taking on the challenge of planning various projects from new perspectives, not limited to urban planning. This time, the museum, which is closed for a long period of time for maintenance, will dive into the city for a special project with Tokyo Biennale 2023.
Reiichi Noguchi (Senior Curator, Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum)
Masato Nakamura (General Director of Tokyo Biennale 2023, artist)
This is the second time the Tokyo Biennale has been held. What is the significance of holding an art festival in a city? The Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho area (known as the Daimaruyu area), where the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum is also located, is a central business district. What does General Director Nakamura, who is developing a major art project called the art festival while involving the metropolis of Tokyo, expect from the area? What is needed from conception to realisation? We take a closer look at Nakamura's "new vision for the arts festival." He will also discuss the highlights of the Tokyo Biennale 2023 and the artworks on display in the Daimaruyu.
