"Long Notes" is an engaging project conceived by artist Kray Chen in collaboration with composer Yu Kuwabara. This innovative initiative involves five amateur musicians hailing from diverse backgrounds. These participants were invited to delve into their personal musical journeys, sharing their past experiences with music and reflecting on how music remains an integral part of their lives.

Through a captivating series of performances, these individuals endeavor to encapsulate their unique histories and cherished memories using the language of tones, harmonies, and movements. Simultaneously, they aim to provoke contemplation about the atonal nature of our interactions in this digital age.

In our first workshop, we ventured into the realm of wordless conversation. Here, we stripped away the familiar comfort of words, allowing the ebb and flow of tones to guide our expressions.

In the second workshop, participants translated the melodies within their minds onto paper, translating these abstract sounds into marks and lines. These notes were then shared among fellow participants, who undertook the task of interpreting each others' unique notations.

The third workshop asked participants to communicate through humming and rhythmic movement. Guided by lines on the floor, which served as both a path and a structure, participants navigated this unspoken dialogue and attempted to foster a unified sound.

In the fourth workshop, participants were tasked with projecting their voices to reach the highest notes at the loudest volumes. Two variations were explored: one, where participants went higher and higher with each note, and other in reverse, where the participants started with the highest note and gradually went lower.

SOCIAL DIVE: Artist-in-Residence Projects

For the SOCIAL DIVE Artist in Residence Projects, an open call program that was held in the previous Tokyo Biennale 2020/2021, twelve overseas artists were selected from over 1,535 applications. However, the projects of seven of those artists were postponed due to the effects of the coronavirus.

For Tokyo Biennale 2023, we plan to invite the artists who were unable to come to Japan to present their works. The artists will “dive” into various areas of the Tokyo cityscape, observe the charm of people who live and gather there, and generate new values. While interacting with society, the artists will come to reveal various connections latent in the city. These connections may offer unexpected perspectives for those who live and work in Japan today, or viewpoints that are all too familiar for its inhabitants to notice.
