Using Crowdfunding to Revitalize the Kanda River with Small Boat-Racing

Command N began its work in 1997, when it was created by members involved in artistic activities. The name Command N was taken from the Macintosh shortcut “command + N”. The group became a non-profit organization in 2010 and has held large numbers of wide-ranging projects as an “artist initiative”, incorporating artist-led approaches that engage with the city. An exhibition titled “Open the New page!” was held in 2017 for the 20th anniversary of its founding.
Using donations, hold a race with miniature Japanese-style wooden boats along the Kanda River. Gathered funds will go towards revitalization and clean-up of the river and its surroundings.
1,000 miniature wooden boats made in the style of the traditional Japanese boat (“wasen”) will be put afloat on the Kanda River, to then flow naturally along the river in a race known as “Tenmasen”. Anyone can participate by making a 1,000 JPY donation per boat, with 50% of gathered funds to be used towards revitalization and clean-up of the river and its surroundings. With crowdfunding as part of its motive, the more bustling the race, the more the river’s beauty will be brought back.
