Tokyo Biennale 2023 will offer a deep city walk guided by Mr. Shunya Yoshimi (Chairman of Tokyo Cultural Resource Council, Professor at Kokugakuin University, Faculty of Tourism and City Planning), who also serves as a special member of the Tokyo Biennale Citizens' Committee.

Mr. Yoshimi, a sociologist, will take you on a tour of the Higashi-Ueno and Okachimachi neighborhoods, diving deep into history from his sharp perspective and exploring Asia while staying in Tokyo, Japan.

Mr. Yoshimi's comments

In Ueno and Okachimachi, a huge Asia stretches from east to west across Showa-dori Avenue. The breadth and diversity of Asia may be greater than the Korean culture in Shin-Okubo, Shinjuku, or the Chinese culture in Ikebukuro. The multinational food culture of Ueno Ameyoko, the jewelry culture of Okachimachi, the Islamic mosques, and the Korean town that stubbornly remains in Higashi Ueno. These are not connected by roads such as Showa-dori. In this town walk, we would like to consider how we can overcome the barriers of Showa-dori Avenue and make "Asia" in the northern part of the city center emerge in the course of our journey through "Asia" in Ueno and Okachimachi.
