Outline

In Tokyo, many buildings are demolished every year due to aging and redevelopment. New structures get a spotlight, but faded structures get less light. However, each of these buildings has various cultural values. Not Lost Tokyo is an experimental art project that explores rebirth as new value by digitizing Tokyo's disappearing buildings.

At the Tokyo Biennale 2023, based on the detailed 3D data of the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building, which was demolished in 2022 and is a representative of Metabolism architecture, we will create a variety of works and present creative uses. By doing so, we would like to show "new possibilities for buildings through digitization." The idea of Metabolism, which gave birth to the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building, was "based on the principles of life, cities and architecture that grow organically in line with social changes and population growth." This attempt can be described as a new kind of Metabolism that takes the 3D data of a building as the building's DNA and organically grows it into the future beyond the physical framework of architecture.

Activities

Workshops will be held during the summer session from July to September 2023. In the workshop, you will learn about the idea of Metabolism and come up with ideas for creative ways to use it based on the 3D data of the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building. During the autumn session from September 23rd to November 5th, 2023, various works based on the 3D data of the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building will be exhibited.
